Four Years on the Scale

Scroll

I have been seeing a nutritionist regularly since April 2022. Every few weeks. Sometimes every six weeks, sometimes every two months. Always the same scale, always the same conditions. These are the only numbers I trust.

I weigh myself at home too. But those numbers fluctuate depending on the time of day, clothing, whether I have eaten. The numbers from the nutritionist are the official ones. The real ones.

Beginning and End

What I See When I Read These Numbers

The first thing you notice: it is not a straight line going down. It is a zigzag. Down, up, down, up. Like a saw blade. And yet — the trend goes down. Slowly, but it goes.

The beginning was the best part. April to September 2022: 17.5 kilos down in five months. I was motivated, I had just started, everything was new. Like a new relationship — at the start, everything runs by itself.

Then came the setback. From November 2022 to August 2023, I gained back over 10 kilos. Ten kilos. Months of work, just gone. During that phase, I started blogging. Not because things were going well, but because they were going badly. The blog was my outlet. If I am not losing weight, I can at least write about it.

Christmas is the enemy. January 2024: plus 5 kilos after the holidays and New Year's Eve in London. This pattern repeats every year. Holidays, invitations, restaurant visits — and then I stand on the scale in January thinking: here we go again.

I drew a consequence from this: I stopped travelling. Not until 130 kilos. Every time I travel, I gain weight. Every time. Without exception. So I stopped.

What Helped

Cutting fruit. Sounds crazy, but my nutritionist discovered in autumn 2023 that I was eating too much fruit. Too much sugar, even if it is natural. When I cut back on fruit, I lost 4.5 kilos the following month. Instead: more vegetables and salad.

Eating slower, smaller bites. One of those tips that sounds so simple you ignore it. Until you actually do it and realise you are full with half the portion.

Strength training. Not to lose weight — that is what nutrition does. But to not lose your body during the whole process.

Mounjaro. Since summer 2025, I have been taking Mounjaro. It lowers the long-term blood sugar HbA1c, and it helps with weight loss. Since then, the strongest downward trend since the beginning: from 217 to 207 kilos. My lowest value at the nutritionist was 207.8 kg in December 2025. Then a small increase again — Christmas. Of course.

What I Take From This

21 kilos in four years. That is 5 kilos per year. It does not sound like much. Sometimes I think: four years, and that is all?

But then I think about the alternative. Without the nutritionist, without the blog, without Mounjaro — where would I be? Probably at 240, 250 kilos. Maybe more. So 21 kilos is not just 21 kilos. It is 21 kilos plus the 20 or 30 I did not gain.

The road is still long. 130 kilos is the goal I set for myself before I am allowed to travel again. That is another 80 kilos. At 5 kilos per year, that would be 16 years. That is too long. But the pace does not have to repeat itself. The Mounjaro phase shows it can be faster. 9 kilos in six months. If I can keep that up, the maths look different.

And even if not — the direction is right. The scale does not lie. And neither does my nutritionist.
